What is Vector Art
Vector art uses mathematical equations for points, lines, curves and shapes to represent images on a computer screen. This gives vector art many advantages over raster art (pixel based artwork), but both work great for different projects.
Vector art is best used for logo design and illustrations. This is because the graphics will come out very sharp and clean and can be re-sized to any size without losing quality. Vector art is also very easy to edit so you can change colors, add/remove elements and switch gradients very quickly and easily.
Raster art works best for photography editing. Because its pixel based it allows you to edit very detailed photos and blend photos and graphics together easily, which would be impossible with vector art. Most graphics are rasterized (turned into raster art) for the web, so even if you have a vector logo when you save it as a .jpeg or .gif for the web it will become pixel based. If you tried to blow up that file, you would see a loss in quality.
The beauty of how vector art works is you can just go back to your original vector file and resize the logo as needed, then save it again for the web or for print. If all you have for your original is a raster .jpeg file of your logo you may run into trouble. You can convert raster artwork into vector artwork, but the end result really depends on the skill of the designer and the detail of the work. It would be much easier to vectorize an old raster logo than it would a photograph.
